I need some serious help with PAINTS!!!!

Posted in Custom Workstation

Basically long story short, i have used every single type of paint known to man: Vallejo, Tamiya, Testors, Hobby Lobby craft paint, etc. All have been acrylic and here's the problem, about 80% of the time they absolutely will not, I repeat will not stay on, like if i just do a suble scratch the dang paint just peels right off -_- Ive used clay, i used wood (which that does stick), im currently using Polymorph (it absolutely refuses to stick to this, and no i cant sand it cause if i do it becomes all frayed and rough) ive washed and sanded and primed and coated but it will not stay, does anyone have any sort of suggestion? I am almost tempted to cover my while figure in super glue to protect it -_- thanks!

Oh and see one of the problems is im a customizer who literally makes everything out of clay (plastimorph now) but like 30% of an actual figure, so I've just had a field day with paints galore lol

Thanks for the reply guys! Haha yeah I know exactly what you mean! Every paint is its own little snow flake xD but I do appreciate the feedback, personally what is your favorite and what have you had the most success with? testors, tamiya or vallejo?

I use Formula P3 paints because they're the cheapest "premium" paint at $2.50. They flow well when handpainting and have good coverage even if thinned with water. White and Yellow are still a hassle to work with though.

I read that people are using paint found at RC car shops because it's durable, though I'm guessing that's because it's solvent based, or it's a dye like VHT vinyl dye. either way, worth looking into, especially if you get more paint in a bottle for your money.

Acrylic paint isn't durable, especially not on plastic that physically doesn't want to let it adhere in the first place. Even paint within the same brand has different levels of toughness, for example, Testors Deep Sea Blue is super tough and goes on super smooth, it's as if it has the perfect blend of flow promoters and creates its own hard shell when it cures. But if I use Testors International Orange, it's streaky, it tends to have visible brushstrokes, drybrushing is a pain, it's not pleasant to work with.

All you can do is grind plastic from the joints, prime and paint your figure, then use a few coats of sealer just to be able to handle the figure day to day without rubbing paint off with your oily fingers. If there's an aerosolized supeglue out there let us know, because coating it with that is what it takes to keep acrylic paint from scratching off lol.

You can also try lacquer paint, it's much more durable.

Everyone uses something different or some of the same type of paints. I learn a lot from reading all of the tutorials, and with the help of YouTube, YouTube tutorials. I currently use Testors and Games workshop paints. Check out "Custom Action Figures" videos on YouTube and see all of the painting tutorials. Some of quick and to the point and others are step by step. I hope this helps!!! Good luck!!
