Hello guys, me again What would cause a primer, once applied to remain sticky/tacky? The custom I am working on had a coat of primer on it and even after a few days it remained sticky. I first used the kind in the small can that is near the car model kits at Hobby lobby or Michael's. I then used a larger can that says its ok for plastic and it did the same thing. I thought about seperating all the parts to paint easier after the fact and placed it in hot water to soften the plastic and needless to say made it worse . Luckily I took that time to go ahead and remove all the primer and now am at square one again. Any thoughts?
Modge Podge can help with sticky primered plastics. It's essentially watered down glue that will dry clear. I usually three coat process. Paint the color I want, layer of modge podge, repaint.
There are some plastics that refuse to accept anything you spray on them, I hate them so much lol. The belt on the Johnny Quick I made immediately got sticky when I used my usual primer (Krylon Colormaster, regular version). Tried scraping it all off and painting it normally but it was still sticky, and the paint would flake off! How does that even happen? Defies physics lol.
Oh wow, that SUX! Yeah I figured the plastic of a mattel WWE figure wouldn't have any issues but it did. The parts that I painted w/o primer had no issues. Where can you find that Krylon Color Master primer? Does it usually adhere w/o gettin tacky/sticky? Thanks for the response!
I use the chaos black primer can from citadel.. shake well and apply light coats from a distance.. its non sticky and it will give you a matte finish. it works perfectly for my customs. But its a bit pricey in my opinion. it works great. I use the can for large areas, like legs, head casts etc. smaller parts where its unnecessary, just use a brush to save on the can. I won't recommend on using hot water to soften plastics after any paint job. a blow dryer works better for me as I have more control on the amount of heat applied as to apply just enough heat to not ruin the integrity of the piece. give it a try, hope it works for you..
Cool, I'll have to track this down and try it. Where is a good place to look? You said for the smaller parts you just use a brush, are you able to take the top off? Yeah I had a feeling the water wasn't a good idea but I was at work and sometimes do small parts of my projects there and we had hot water readily available. Lol. I'll never do that again! Thanks for the response!
There is a Citadel Workshop store close to where I live, I just go there and buy it.. The top does not come off, let me clarify I get the imperial primer from citadel workshop. I also get the chaos black spray can there. if youre gonna use the imperial primer just water it down a bit as you would with any paint. keep in mind that the spray can is a bit pricier than other black primer paint you would get at walmart or similar stores. but the end result is much better, in my opinion anyways awesome glad I can help. if you do end up trying it keep me updated on how it works for you.
I have a bottle of mod podge to try it out
Thanks for the response!
