Paint types - Which are the best?

Posted in Custom Workstation

I've been collecting figures for a while now. I enjoy playing with them as much as posing them on my shelves. Which paint types are the most durable and present the best look and feel?

Lacquer, acrylic, enamel? Is there a clear coat sealant available on the US market?

I've been using enamel paints combined with paint thinner to dull out the shiny finish and get more durability out of the paints. I figured acrylics, being water based, wouldn't stand up to wear and tear and I'd have to constantly repaint.

Any ideas ever, comments and suggestions that are relevant would be helpful. Thanks

Tamiya does work pretty well also, you just got to let the pait cure for a day or two before assembly.

I tend to use enamels more than anything. I use a lacquer primer coat, then enamels on top. They hold up nicely for me, if you don't overly use your figure. For a top coat, I usually just spray on a layer or two of clear coat. From what a lot of people have said, it's true about that future floor polish stuff being a good, durable topcoat as well.

Compatibility with the plastics you're using is the most important thing to look for in paints, finish can be changed at will with matte/gloss topcoats.

Testors acrylics have been the most durable I've used, I think because they have a little sealer mixed in, making them tougher when cured. I use Formula P3 paints though because they're a dollar cheaper and handbrush well, but are about as durable as any of the other acrylics out there.

Haven't used enamels since they always made my figures sticky.

I want to try Lacquers since they're durable, but no one around here has experience using them.

I'm going to go buy some of the stuff people use to seal wood floors, supposedly it's a super tough topcoat. Anyone have suggestions for what particular brand to use?

I'll ping back with results.
