Flaming cape

I have the cape of Conan's Wrarrl and am looking at the bottom and see flames. As you all know, fire flames upwards. I am using my phone and I don't see a way to add a photo of the cape, but I would like some pointers on how my fellow painters would handle this. The metal work on top is painted clear red. I want some blackness to the upper part of the cape, so the cape looks like it's on fire. Thanks for the input!
