Silver Rub 'n Buff

Posted in Custom Workstation

Aren't I full of questions tonight... Another custom I'm doing right now is Silver Surfer. I used Amaco Rub 'N Buff silver wax to create his silvery look and it actually looks fantastic, I don't think the usual silver pigmented paint could've done quite this good. Anyone else ever used this for a figure? I'm asking because there's no indication on the product if this needs to be seal. It's dry but it's still leaving silver residue on my fingers when handling it. Maybe seal it like regular paint? Also is it possible to buff it to the point of being almost reflective like I've seen people do for cosplay pieces or would that be undoable on a figure?

I don't see why you couldnt polish it to be reflective on a figure, their costumes are just plastic and paint too. I've seen people talk about that stuff on miniatures sites, could try asking there too

first link that appears when searching "rub n buff sealer" http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f28/rub- ... not-39030/

Ah I see, I applided the wax with a brush so now I'm guessing I need to give it a good rub so it heats up and seals itself.

Yeah, it's interesting, if heat is all that's needed to activate the wax, then in theory you should be able to lightly brush or rub it on then hit it with a hairdryer, since that'll be hotter than anything you could comfortably achieve by rubbing it with your fingers.

From what I've been reading, you need to rub it pretty hard to get it to permanently seal, something which I'm guessing is much easier to accomplish on a large flat surface and not so much of the uneven tiny limbs of an action figure. Still, I'm trying. After literally getting a blister on one thumb (I'm a girl, I have soft delicate skin okay!? :P) I decided to cheat and used a hairdryer, like you suggested, to heat up the figure and kept rubbing it. Perplexing enough though, the stuff is coming off easier than ever. Anything it touches removes the silver right off. Might just need to let it sit for a day or 2 for it to settle before I can attempt to fix those spots. I'll keep you posted!

The physics of customizing action figures is completely loopy sometimes, like when primer gets sticky, but paint won't stick to it lol

Did you sand the surface of the plastic with fine sandpaper before applying the rnb? Maybe the plastic is too slick. I see the prop makers spray a little grey primer and wet sand that, instead of applying directly to plastic pieces.

I thought it might be an adherence issue as well, so I might give a sand and try again. I also read the manufacturer suggesting a varathane or polyurethane sealant, so I might get one of those to be on the safe side.

Cool, I'm def interested in the results because I'd like to use some rnb on a space knight I'm working on.

Be careful with whatever sealant you use as it could easily melt the plastic. I'd suggest testing it on a "junk" part of the same material to see how it reacts.

Yeah, I intented to test it first. I'll be buying the sealant this weekend so I'll let you know how it turns out. I'm sure other people would be curious to know.

Test was conclusive, polyurethane didn't melt the plastic or anything. I'll be proceeding on the actual figure next. Still apprehensive, gotta make thin layers or it builds up in some spots.
