What sculpting material do you use?

Posted in Custom Workstation

Hi, I've been rather disconnected from the customizing world lately and I am slowly restarting to get to it. But I have a problem, since some time ago, the Magic Sculpt two part epoxi is making my hands irritated, even touching a dry custom, the residual stickyness irritates my hands, making them red and swallowen. Anyway, using gloves is quite annoying and you lose that feel, so I am thinking about changing of material.

I've thought of using some sort of FIMO or oven baked Sculpey, but I have my reservations about the strength. I know Fimo is not strong enough, it breaks too easily for my taste (at least the FIMO I tried 10 years ago). Is Sculpey strong enough? I want something similar to Magic Sculpt in terms of solidness. And also, can it be "baken" in boiling water? because having to setup the oven each time I want to dry something would be unpractical for me.

I've been reading that now there are some air drying professional clays out there, but I have the same reservations regarding strength and durability. What do you recommend me?

Thanks in advance.

I don't get problems with Green Stuff which is also two part sort of epoxy, but with others Epoxies I have problem. I might test some of them although I would prefer something which is a different material altogether.

Thanks for the replies.

I use procreate putty quite a bit. It holds detail well, plus it's slightly flexible and very durable.

Fimo and Sculpey have about the same durability, I don't like them because if you use them near joints they sometimes get stress cracks. You can boil them to harden, but I've never had them be as durable as I wanted.

I use Apoxie Sculpt, or sometimes 2-part epoxy putty when I need something indestructible (like armature).

Yeah, you can develop allergic reactions to things, try using the recommended barrier creams and see if that helps.

I'd like more people to chime in, I get sick of hearing myself type lol.
