Identifying different types of plastic in figures?

Posted in Custom Workstation

I got a Marvel Legends White Tiger recently to use as a base, but her abdomen seems to be made of a different type of plastic from the rest of her. It sounds like it's hollow (the rest of the sculpt are solid pieces), feels harder, and is significantly more glossy, and just from the feel of it, I don't think it would take well to sanding or dremeling- it seems more brittle, somehow. Does anyone else have a White Tiger and can tell me whether or not I'm crazy? And if it is a different type of plastic, should I use a different type of paint? Most of mine are brush-on acrylics, but I've got a can of spray lacquer of the type you would usually use on Transformers that might be more suited if I'm right and the abs are ABS instead of PVC.

Yeah, the lower torso is made from a harder, more rigid plastic compared to everything else on the figure. There's no problem with sanding or dremeling, only thing I'd suggest to keep in mind is to use a fine grit sandpaper since any lines scoured into the plastic using a coarse sandpaper or dremel can show up in the paint afterward . The acrylics are fine to use and as long as you don't apply the paint to thickly, and allow it to properly dry, there shouldn't be any problems with chipping or flaking with normal handling.

Your not crazy and I believe the upper thigh joints that connect into the abdomen are as well. That harder hollow plastic is easy to sand and dremeled, and is not easy to cut with an exacto or razor. That softer kind of rubbery plastic the arms and legs are usually made of, to me, seems harder to sand and way hard to dremel, but easy to cut with an exacto or razor
