Posted in Custom Workstation

Hey guys I'm working on my first custom figure and I'm using a marvel legends Polaris, I'm having trouble cracking the lower torso any suggestions?

You can also crack the hip piece itself since it's made of two hard plastic halves. Remove the leg at the thigh, then see if it's easier/less messy to crack the hip piece.

Try pulling out the barbell from the top, maybe that will give you room to pry the halves apart there instead of needing to drill holes along the seam. Also try sliding a blade between the halves to cut through any stubborn posts.

Unfortunately cracking torsos with little damage is very hit-and-miss, it just depends on how haphazardly the figure was assembled at the factory. For example, I just pried apart a Speed Demon with my barehands because there was a gap near the ab hinge.

didn't worked with ml female bodies till now,but if I have problems with cracking lower torsos by drilling a hole between the legs,I drill more holes at the side of the hips...but are you sure you can and have to crack it? if it's softer material, its one piece and you could just grind and sand the joints like on the shoulder.

The more recent ML female figures have two piece, hard plastic hip pieces, although the larger figures, such as She-Hulk from the A-Force set, the older Red She-Hulk, Valkyrie, Thundra, the SDCC Hela, use the softer plastic. Regardless of which hip the figures use, I've found there's enough movement in the joint to sand almost the entire piece without having to crack anything open, you just have to have a bit of patience and take your time, I use the small modeler's files followed by a fine grit sandpaper. The only drawback is having limited access to that area of the lower torso, so you're really only able to sand and paint the outer edge, but for me that hasn't been much of an issue as I do customs for myself, though any remaining original color isn't noticeable unless you spread the legs apart and shine a light up in the gap, lol! Using an airbrush or spray paint would probably minimize any uncovered areas even more.

One other thing, the figures with the hard plastic hips connect to a bar which runs through the crotch and it often becomes loose with minimal posing, and every now and then right out of the package. That can be fixed by heating and popping off the legs, spreading the hips apart and applying a bit of super glue to the area where the bar goes through the crotch. I use the liquid super glue in a bottle with the long, tapered tip, just apply a couple of drops to one side and the let the figure rest on its side until the glue dries.
