It’s commonplace in the James Bond franchise for characters such as Moneypenny, Q and M to be carried over from film to film despite the actor playing Bond being traded out. The most profound impact on the series has to be Judy Dench’s M, introduced in 1995s Goldeneye, Pierce Brosnan’s first (and best) outing as 007. She was originally presented as a check on Bond’s misogyny and womanizing- a foil for him more than a supervisor- and it was the most successful aspect of those films. As her character progressed, she became more of a mother figure, and her relationship with Bond deepened. Once Daniel Craig took over in 2006, they began to give M meatier things to do and her relationship with Craig’s Bond became even more complex and intertwined, so much so that even after her character’s death in SKYFALL, she still has an impact on the narrative of its follow up, SPECTRE.
