I love The Rocketeer and saw the film in theaters several times. I was always dismayed at the tons of trash merchandise that Disney released around the film. The only action figure we got was a lame bendie, for goodness sakes! Well, I decided to make my own figure, which ended up being the very first custom action figure that I ever made, and which I already posted here a couple of weeks back. This is my second attempt from a couple of years later. I used an Arnold Schwarzenegger figure from The Last Action Hero toy line as the base. I know it is a bit bulky for the more slender Rocketeer, but I couldn't ignore the nice sculpt with the perfect jacket. As before, I used cardboard for the front of the jacket and for the harness, with cut metal push pins for the buttons. I scratch built the helmet, using the head piece of a Rocket Pack Batman from the first wave of Batman The Animated Series as a starting point. The rocket pack came from the Bendie again, the only good part of that thing, and it was perfectly sized for the figure this time. All around, this second attempt turned out a lot better, far less rough than my first try. If only I knew about sculpting materials back then!!!
Thank you. That helmet was so hard to make, using styrene plastic for the trim and even balsa wood for the two ports on either side of the fin. If I had known about epoxy and/or sculpy back then, it would have been a lot easier! Thanks for taking a look and commenting!
