This time, I bring you an extraordinary figure of a very obscure character: Straw Man! He first appeared in “Dead of Night” #11 1975 under the name Scarecrow. After that, he only had two more appearances: Marvel Spotlight #26 and Marvel Two-in-One #18, before making a comeback in the pages of Doctor Strange in ’92, appearing in three issues, then calling himself ‘Straw Man’ because he didn’t want to be confused with the psychotic serial killer that went by the name Scarecrow. I had never heard of the character, but when I saw him in Marvel’s Official Horror Handbook I thought I’d find out who he was, and I really enjoyed reading those books from the ‘70s. It’s a shame he wasn’t used more!! For the figure, I started out with a regular ML Mr Fantastic. I sculpted the head using FIXIT sculpt, which is also what I used to make the hat from scratch. I modified the body some too as you see. I was happy to discover a great method for making the texture of his shirt and pants. The coat is one from Urban Legends Punisher that I ripped up a bit and painted green. I just love this figure and I think it’s quite fabulous – pictures can’t do it justice! Hope you like it as much as I do, and if you have any questions, just ask! ***UPDATE OCTOBER 2007*** Going through my customs, updating the ones that need it, Straw Man didn't need much, as I still consider it one of my best customs, but I finally made him a better scarf using paper. It's not perfect, but I think it looks better with the rest of the figure than the temporary version did. ![]() |

Going through my customs, updating the ones that need it, Straw Man didn't need much, as I still consider it one of my best customs, but I finally made him a better scarf using paper. It's not perfect, but I think it looks better with the rest of the figure than the temporary version did. And I repainted tha hat too!
In the comics, Straw Man guards the gateway to another realm, which goes through a painting. He stops monsters from getting into our world and when he needs to, he takes solid form.
I made the painting from a picture of the figure, based on the painting in his first apperance (the reference picture)
Here's Dr Strange and Daredevil with it:
