First appearing in Amazing Spider-Man #28 (September 1965) a criminal called Mark Raxton attempted to steal an experimental liquid alloy for profit. Raxton accidentally spilled the alloy all over himself turning his entire body into a solid metallic substance able to generate intense heat. Turning to a life of crime and calling himself the Molten Man he clashed many times with Spider-Man finding that his slick, metallic body is resistant to Spider-Man's webbing.
