This is version 2 of my Red Hood custom: I realise my first one ended up looking pretty sorry, even though it was the most ambitious custom I'd done up to that point (and still is). I'm having a lot of trouble achieving clean paints and need some help with that, perhaps the trick is in applying multiple thin coats instead of one thick one, but eh for the time being. The recipe is the same as the first version: body from Black Manta, jacket and lower arms from Jack Knight Starman, head from a Spider-Man figure and sculpted over, holster, knife, pistol, pads on gloves and boots and blousing of the trousers all sculpted. For this updated version, the first thing I did was trim the jacket so it looks shorter, more like the bolero-type motorcycle jacket Red Hood wears in the "Under the Hood" storyline. Then I tried to clean up the paints, and here he is, marginally improved - the last photo has the first version on the left and the new one on the right. EDIT: Updated with a repaint and weapons upgrade. 2nd Update with a repaint and some new weapons ![]() |

I've found Citadel and Vallejo (usually used for WH 40k miniatures) to go on VERY smoothly, and I haven't had any isues thinning them out with plain ol' water when they need it. They run about the same in price as anything else, and they have a bunch of great colors available too.
Testors and Tamiya are great 'finishing' paints (especially Testor's metallic glossy paints), for me; they give a real nice, glossy & professional look, and I usually use them to give a bit more 'pop' to my fniished projects. Also, if you need a transluscent, see through color, you can't do better than Tamiya's 'clear' colors.
Like Fitz said, just go slow, and do multiple thin coats. Patience is the name of the game.
Hope this helps.
