Seeing as how Diamond Select kinda dropped the proverbial ball when it came to rounding out its collection of Star Trek: the Original Series figures (I'm still waiting for them to finally release their "planned" figures of Tholian Web McCoy, Nurse Chapel, Yeoman Rand, the M-113 Salt Vampire, deluxe Mirror Kirk with I.S.S. Entrprise command chair, and the Romulan Commander played by Mark Lenard in "Balance of Terror"), I set out to make a few characters of my own. Second up is Commander Thelin from the second episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series, "Yesteryear". In this episode, in an altered timeline where Spock died as a child, Captain Kirk's First Officer/Science Officer was a gray-skinned Andorian (this was due to the fact that Filmation kinda messed up in their design of the character...it was later explained in licensed Star Trek fiction that his pigmentation was due to the fact that he was half Andorian, half Aenar).
The figure himself was a pretty easy, straight-forward custom. I took an extra Art Asylum Spock figure, and using the boil and pop method, removed his head and hands. Next, again using the boil and pop method, I removed the head from an extra Art Asylum Enterprise Series 2 Shran the Andorian figure, and attached it to the Spock body, along with the hands from an extra Diamond Select Captain Kirk figure (before attaching the head and hands, they were fully repainted with gray paint for the skin and white for the hair). Once the head and hands were attached, I did a slight touch-up in gold paint on the rank stripes on the sleeves to make them stand out more, and as soon as the paint had dried, ta-da, Commander Thelin, First Officer/Science Officer of the Starship Enterprise in an altered timeline!
Please let me know what you guys think of him, and as always, comments are appreciated.
