Black Widow (Marvel Legends) Custom Action Figure
Custom #:39859
Name:Black Widow
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:Marvel Legends
Creator:yaoutm45
Date Added:June 11, 2012
Base Figure:Black Canary DCUC, Wonder Girl Donna Troy DCUC
Height:6.00 inches
Completion Time:48.00 hours
I had an old Marvel Legends Black Widow from series 6 (I think). She had a really ugly head and when the Avengers movie came out, I wanted to display her with all my avengers figures but just couldn't get over the fact how ugly she is. So I looked into my figures for the best looking head which is close to Scarlett Jo in the movie and Black Canary's head seem to fit the bill. I also got the inspiration from Jin Saotome's Black Widow which is many times better. This is my first custom and it was interesting and gratifying to make. First time working with Apoxie and did not know I was suppose to use water to help. This is why her exposed breast looks funny (not smooth).

I used the Wonder Girl lower body because I thought this would make her shorter, however, she ended up the same height as her ML widow because I think Black Canary's upper body is long which made her taller again.

Recipe:
Head: Black Canary DCUC
Upper Torso: Same
Lower Torso: DCUC Donna Troy (Wonder Girl)
Legs: Same
Arms: ML Black Widow (series 6??)

Sculpted to give her more TnA side gun pouch, belt and belt pouch.

Nothin to say that hasn't been said already. The great part about this hobby is that if your willing, anything can be done over. Check out the tutorials on here if you haven't, they're great. promising start though... fun ain't it?!?

I think you did fine on your first custom. But it takes patience to get it right. The excitement or frustration of completing a project can lead to slip ups. To fix it you can just sand them to smooth them out. I typically use nail files or blocks from the cosmetics aisle to go over small areas. Boobs are the worst feature to sculpt on females but still we love them. lol. So just give it your best, Your on a good start.

Thanks for the tip!! I am trying to fix it as we speak...or have tried..I'll see how it goes. Boobies are definitely difficult as I am not sure how to create a good looking cleavage.

"Boobies are definitely difficult as I am not sure how to create a good looking cleavage"

Might I suggest google image search? Last I checked, there's a lot of boobs on the internet. That and familiarizing yourself with the real thing.

Serious though, check out some anatomy books and existing female action figure of a similar scale. Knowing how the neck joins to the collarbones, and how a woman's chest tapers down, and at what angles - it's helpful when sculpting such things.

Good part use, poor sculpting execution. I'd highly recommend either using Aves Apoxie Sculpt + and sandpaper. Aves is great, as it can be smoothed with water (or a special solution available from Aves website) after it's applied/before it's cured. If you're in a similar situation where Aves has cured without being smoothed, try using some sanding sponges (Available from any hardware store). Typically, they have a rough and smooth side, great for taking down aves into a nicer finish.

Critique aside, it's a great first custom, and an excellent head choice for Black widow. It's just a shame to see her with such bumpy breasts.

Thanks guys!!! Really appreciate the honest feedback!! I wish I had read more about Apoxie Sculpt before actually working at it. I was also rushing it because I really wanted to paint it. Any idea on how I could fix it and make it more smooth?? It is a little hard to sand the curvy part...hahaha

re: making the edges smoother - that's the magic of a sanding sponge. Because it has some give to it underneath the sandpaper, it's perfect for smoothing off edges. This can actually work against you if you're trying to sand hard edges (armor, robots, etc.) - but it's great for organic edges. Just try to do must of the hard work smoothing it with your fingers + a little bit of water after it's been applied and on the figure for 5-10 min.
