I'm the owner of a new gaming console that is coming out in 2013. I had this conversation with my brother about why gaming systems do great, or fail. He said that every gaming system that does well, usually has a stand alone character that carries their brand. I asked him, well what about Playstation? Who is their stand alone.All of their great characters are from other brands,and not Sony. I like the Earthworm Jim games. Hopefully they will make a new one. Who can guess what parts I used to make this? I sure cant. I just didn't like the arms on the original figure, so changed those out, and modded the legs, sculpted the head and the gun and here he is folks!
Wow, everyone thanks for your comments. Does anyone know of a Sony character that is popular enough as a stand alone? Nintendo clearly has Mario, and for example Sega's was sonic, and who is the X box stand alone? Ouya is the name of the new console by the way. It's gonna be awesome when it comes out.
I guess the mark of a brand mascot is: can their game sell a system on it's own (Killer App?) Far as I can tell, for the PS3, the top contenders would be: Kratos(God of War 3) Nathan Drake(Uncharted 2) Sackboy(Little Big Planet) Ratchet & Clank
I think it's evocative of the changing industry that those companies aren't basing all of their marketing on one mascot anymore. Even Nintendo (even though Mario is forever their icon,) is offering more than that these days.
Some time ago it would have been Lara Croft for playstation.she clearly was the new type of female hero with her oversized B**Bs ^^ But now,I don't know if there's really a sony stand alone that crossed years.For XBox I'd say Masterchief...

On another note, sony has a lot of cool characters, but I'd say their brand seller is Kratos.
