Mirage Comics #1 (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) Custom Action Figure
Inspired by the cover art to one of, if not the most frustrating video games of all time, which itself was inspired by TMNT #4, come the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Way back when on Christmas of 1990 my brother and I got a Nintendo and Ninja Turtles the video game. I always thought they looked really cool on the cover, despite the fact that they weren't wearing their trademark colors from the cartoon. Little did I know, what with being 5 and all that this was what the comic books were like. Flash forward to spring of 2013 and the new figures just screamed "Customize us MulliganNY! Customize us!" and so I did. Each turtle was sanded down and painted up. What was particularly challenging with this set was mixing enough paint for all 4 turtles and painting fast enough so the paint didn't dry out. After they had dried, I carefully drew the lines on them with a fine point marker to give them a comic book, hand drawn look. The colors themselves are all inspired by the NECA line of Turtles. Buying and painting these guys seemed like a much cheaper alternative to spending hundreds on the others. Cowabunga! Please wait... |

I never beat the first NES TMNT game, not even with an emulator and save states, that sucker is hard. Given the weird enemies in that game, I still maintain that it was originally intended to be something else and Konami just gave it a TMNT makeover when they acquired the license.
As for the game, I think it was always going to be TMNT, however it was a fairly new and young American property being developed by people in Japan. I'd bet they just gave them some art work from the show and comics and said, "make a game."
Look at Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, it's filled with weird enemies not in the show. Most licensed games back then were put out fast with little thought to the source material.
