I've been putting off making this custom for months, but the Cheapskate Challenge contest was the perfect excuse to finally get him done. The base is a simple killer whale toy I got at a Deal$ for just a buck. Seeing how the toy came from a known discount chain and literally cost $1 it's perfect for the contest. Modifications were done with a little apoxie sculpt and paint.

Now let's talk about the character. Akhlut is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series, one of the Egg Bosses from Dr. Eggman's Dark Egg Legion chapters. He's a cybernetically enhanced orca who combines his sonar with psychic energy for devastating blast attacks and mind control. I think my favorite part of this character is that he is essentially an in joke. Back in Sonic Adventure there was a killer whale who smashed a pier apart behind Sonic as he ran through the level, since then killer whales have occasionally popped up in Sonic's games (including Sonic Heroes, Sonic '06, All Stars Racer, and a couple others) and fans have speculated that it is the same whale, sort of a nemesis for Sonic like a reverse Ahab thing (probably why Sonic has such a bad case of hydrophobia these days.) Even the character's name is special, Akhlut is a creature from Inuit mythology who could appear in the form of a wolf or orca, so if you're going to name an evil killer whale I guess that's pretty fitting.
