In Greek Mythology, the Naiads or Naiades ("to flow" , "running water") were a type of nymph who presided over fountains, wells, springs, streams, and brooks.The essence of a naiad was bound to her spring, so if a naiad's body of water dried, she died.

Naiads were associated with fresh water, as the Oceanids were with saltwater and the Nereids specifically with the Mediterranean, but because the Greeks thought of the world's waters as all one system, which percolated in from the sea in deep cavernous spaces within the earth, there was some overlap.

The Naiads were either daughters of Zeus or various Oceanids, but a genealogy for such ancient, ageless creatures is easily overstated. The water nymph associated with particular springs was known all through Europe in places with no direct connection with Greece, surviving in the Celtic wells of northwest Europe that have been rededicated to Saints, and in the medieval Melusine.

Naiads could be dangerous and were also known to exhibit jealous tendencies. They were often the object of archaic local cults, worshipped as essential to humans. Boys and girls at coming-of-age ceremonies dedicated their childish locks to the local naiad of the spring. In places like Lerna their waters' ritual cleansings were credited with magical medical properties. Animals were ritually drowned there. Oracles might be situated by ancient springs.

No one felt the betrayal of the Lady of the Lake ore than Gaia herself , to think that a being with such a strong connection to nature could be seduce into evil was unfathomable , her powers were to great and expansive (can become one with the waters of the world , travel thru them anywhere , view events like windows and command their power as burst waves) , Gaia had to counteract her somehow and wit the permission and blessing of Zeus (he had a debt of gratitude toward her for saving and raise him when he was young , as Chromos his father tried to eat him and his brothers , thus preventing Zeus to usurp his power) , she would recruit one of Zeus Naiads to fight against her former ally .

So here we are , meet NYCP Det. Nadia Walters (age 25) , third generation Greco-Italian Cop , on vacation with her family in Greece , while diving into a touristic ruins , she's grab by the ankles and drag down into an underwater cavern by water nymphs , following Zeus command to help Gaia (they need a human host in witch to reside and grant their abilities) however the Greek deities have never been know to ask nicely anything , so they do things by force , and just as they were ready , an angry Gaia stops them , and question them about this barbaric method , gently she helps the young woman to recover and begins to explain to her their dire situation and begs her for help , Nadia confused , surprised and afraid , yet humble that the Spirit of the Earth had actually "beg" her for help , and with tears accepts with honor , but with 3 conditions , #1 she would be in control of her body and powers , #2 she would do so from both this cavern in Greece and from her home in New York City (traveling thru water!) and finally #3 a cool costume! (she's a hardcore comic book collector and fan of super-heroes , one of many reason she became a Cop , to fight evil , a Greek Geek , NICE!) and with both power and gun!? (hey it's regulation ,she has to have it!) and of course with a "cool" costume and code name the world has a new heroine , Naiad , Agent of Gaia!
