Well, since I appear to be on a bit of a "green villains" kick, might as well stick to the theme. Moving on, my next posting is the relatively obscure Spider-Man enemy, the Beetle.

Much like Loki, both ToyBiz and Hasbro have taken a stab at our flying friend here. ToyBiz did a "modern armor" version that was roughly equal in size to the Hulk. But hey, at least he was based on an actual main-universe comic appearance of the character. On the other hand, Hasbro, much more recently, also released a Beetle figure, but based on his Ultimate Comics design. A very cool look, bot once again, neither based on his classic appearance.

I'm not a huge fan of the character, so for me, Beetle was mostly an exercise in creative figure engineering. I was mostly just interested in designing the backpack that contains the Beetle's wings. Obviously, the wings weren't going to actually fold into the shell, but at the very least, the shell should open and the wings would clip into the back. But how?

The solution came to me from an old Gundam model kit: a wing joint from a Wing Gundam, which was constructed with a hinge/rotate "tube joint." A pair of these would allow the Beetle shell wings to hinge backwards from his back, then rotate to the sides and spread apart, allowing room for his insect wings to peg into his back.

I installed the wing joints into an X-Men Classics Archangel body (in fact, it may well have been the spare Mandarin body left over from that custom, I don't recall). The hands and feet came from Hasbro's Ultimate Wolverine figure, and the head and shell wings were entirely sculpted by hand. I cut a section out of the figure's back, and from a ML Wasp figure, I cut out the section of her back that held her wing joints. I sculpted Beetle's back to seamlessly socket in the Wasp wings, and painted them with transparent blue. A complete head-to-toe repaint, and this figure was in the bag.

For a figure that was mostly intended as practice, this Beetle turned out surprisingly well, and I have no problem sitting him on my shelf with the rest of my Spider-Man display. He may not be perfect (in particular, he's somewhat hurt for his lack of a flight stand hold in his back, but there's no place to put it with the wing assembly), but he's a worthy addition, and I'm happy to have him around.

Excelsior!

Thanks so much!

Unfortunately, I'm going to be off the Realm for a bit, AGAIN. The other day, I totaled my car, AND my iPad (which was my new camera) was destroyed in the process. So no new pics until I get a camera. And no new custom work until my arms heal (not badly injured, but still injured).

Define ironic timing: I just start posting figures again after feeling like I've finally got my life back together after two years, and then everything falls apart again. I am so tired of picking up and rebuilding from scratch . . . .

Dude, I'm so sorry to hear that ...I know it's cliche to say, but that which doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. I pray for a speedy recovery, my friend. I look forward to your future creations.

Thanks for the sympathetic support, it really does mean a lot. Although, by this point, with all the stuff that has NOT killed me over the last 20 years, at this point I should be stronger than the Hulk! *chuckles* Anyway, I replaced my car today (Tue), so hopefully I can replace the iPad next (or at least get access to a decent camera), and then I'll be back posting again. Fingers crossed!

Great job figuring out how the make the backpack open. I've been thinking about how to do this myself, so I may be stealing your idea!

Indeed! I like the big Buzzing Beetle figure, and the Ultimate design is cool (if very Iron Man-ish), but this is the way he looks in most fans' heads, so there should be s classic version. Glad you like him!

I know how you feel! Can't tell you how happy I was to get the recent Jean Gray figure, and thus FINALLY have an almost complete set of classic Jim Lee-style late '80s/early '90s X-Men. All I needed was Jubilee . . . and they give us vampire goth Jubilee instead of her classic pink and blue! Good thing I have a custom of her, or I'd be PIIIH-HIIIISSED . . . .

Creatively, that's amazing. Great job, I bet others will want to use this method now!
What's with the MS Paint lines on the second photo on his butt?

Ha! Nice catch! Just a quick coverup of a weird light effect as I was taking the photo. I run all my pics through Photoshop to correct for the yellow light in my room and my own poor camera work. There was a little double-shadowing on the butt, like on the back matte, and I thought it looked funky, so I made it darker. Thought it was too dark to really notice. Sloppy, I guess, if you picked it out! Probably shoulda smudge/blurred it to make it more even.

Anyway, glad you like the figure! I do often hope my ideas inspire others to do the same!

EDIT: Wow, yeah, I DID do a crap job on that touch-up, huh? *laughs* Anyway, uploaded a fixed pic, should show up with the next update. Thanks for pointing it out!

The figure itself stands out as a great custom for the paints and sculpt. When you factor in the engineering for the wings, you have officially knocked it out of the park!

Thanks! I wouldn't have called it a homerun myself, but if you're gonna give it to me, I'll take the point!
