Starfleet determined that their flagship, the Enterprise NX-01, was a sound exploration vessel, but when confronted with the task of supplying needed defense capabilities that the platform would need to be "refitted" to supply much needed power. The addition of a secondary hull allowed the craft to take advantage of a much larger power core without having to completely reconstruct the primary saucer section. The inclusion of a larger deflector array allowed the ability to deflect larger particles found in deep space. All combined the changes would follow thru to the eventual design of her eventual successor the USS Enterprise NCC-1701.

Assembled model. Spray Painted two layers of Metallic Satin Nickel. Used Metallic Gold for Deflector Dish and Sensor Array Dish. Used Metallic Gold, Gun Metal Metallic and Glossy Black for Detailing around the hull of the ship. Used clear blue and clear red for the warp nacelle's. Waterslide factory decals onto hull. Used a pencil to detail the separation of the Hull Panels. Used a Black Sharpie Pen to detail the windows.

Doug Drexler (production designer) had intended for Enterprise to undergo a major refit if a fifth season had been produced, and the series had not been cancelled at the end of the fourth season. This would have seen the addition of a secondary hull, and resulted in the ship taking on an appearance closer to the vessels in The Original Series and later series.
