Was this a thing? Yes, and no. Only in the Challenge Ladder of the 2009 Mortal Kombat reboot. You play as a black cyborg called Unit 5, and, if I recall correctly, he later takes the form of Reptile and plays a bit like him. But, who doesn't love a concept, as well? Reptile has always been one of my absolute favorite Mortal Kombat characters, and since he already had a Jazwares release, I decided to fix up a concept cyborg variation. Love how he came out.
