Professor X body, Black Series Stormtrooper helmet X 100
One fully original sculpted figure, wired with an LED and a switch in his back.

So this isn't exactly a 'single' custom figure. This was 101 cast resin figures. This was my thesis project to graduate from college.

Yes, I graduated college by making a bunch of action figures.

No, really!

It was a hell of a task to make 100 of the 'Suit Troopers'. I originally broke down a Prof. X figure to it's 41 individual components and cast them in silicon. I had about 12 molds, with anywhere from one piece like the helmet, to 6 pieces of the arms. I had planned on making each one fully articulated, but that took me about 5-6 hours from pouring the resin to assembly, so eventually (after about 50 when my molds blew out and I had to re-pour) I had to make them less articulated, and finally for time restrictions (cause I wanted to graduate already) I eliminated almost all articulate entirely.
Forming an illuminating pyramid, 100 Suit Troopers approaching the main figure from behind, who is faceless, lost and absorbed so much by their technology they fail to see the peril approaching from behind. The only color in the all-white piece is a piercing blue LED issuing forth a ghostly glow over the main figure. It's a modern retelling of Plato's 'Allegory of the Cave'. We are so absorbed by our technology, by Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, all the others, that we're losing what it is that makes us human.

The images are from when it was shown at the Littman/White Gallery in Portland, OR.

I about killed myself trying to get this out. I worked on this for two terms at school, day and night. There were times I could swear I was feeling the resin hardening in my lungs. You couldn't see the studio floor through all of the shavings I was producing. The suit jacket was the hardest, and had about a 60% failure rate as it had to be put around the torso of the figure, before the arms were attached, while it was still hot. Too soon and you've got a toxic gooey mess, too late and it cracks because it's set up. Crackerjack timing, Wang, as my old pal Jack Burton used to say to me, even though my name isn't Wang.

This is the kind of thing that proves we're not just fiddling about with toys, it's an art form. This is a spectacular piece of artwork, bravo

X-Myth - you nailed it, that's exactly what I was hoping to illustrate when I began this project; that these 'toys' as they are referred to, are more than just the sum of their parts, and that people that 'play' with them aren't simply over-grown children. We can take them out of the toy isle and put them in the gallery. How many of us have felt less like 'collectors' and more like 'curators' of their mini-museums? Action figures ARE art, especially all of the ones here on FR, and everyone of us is a fine artist, whether they get into a gallery or not.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Keep customizing!
