this was a commission, I got asked to repaint this T-Rex which was painted with a spray can white colour... you could think of the mess it was removing all that. the owner tried to paint it himself and used the spray as a base colour, the problem is that he used a lot! it was a very thick layer of paint, even around 2 to 3 millimetres thick on some parts, that means a lot of detail was lost and I HAD to remove that paint but also protect the toy at the same time. so that was the worst part of this, it took me days to remove all that and it was the longest thing to do on him. after all that I discovered this fella's real colour was a mix of orange shades, very ugly. anyway, what matters here is that even though it's a cheap dinosaur toy, the sculpt was superb. it was very very detailed. so I started with the process of painting. I put a base colour and differentiated the main areas of chest and back with a deep green and a pale yellow and then put many green shades, around 10 I think and maybe 4 for the chest. this was really entertaining since it's all going around with different shades and blending, blending, blending. most of it was dry brushing and also some bits of washing. when all was done I thought that the only thing left to do was to add a base, it would look great with him. so I contacted the owner and asked if he was interested and since he was positive I made one like I always do, with wood. a couple of hours on an afternoon and done, base ready and painted. hope you like it and any comment is appreciated! Aurora first produced the kit in 1974. It was designed by comic book artist Dave Cockrum and sculpted by Bill Lemon. The kit came molded in red with glow-in-the-dark teeth and claws. I’m certain it was this model that inspired Jack Kirby to create Devil Dinosaur in 1978.
Since Aurora went out of business, the kit has been reissued many times, first by Monogram in 1979 (in green plastic) and most recently by Atlantis in 2011 (back to red plastic). There might have been a Revell edition somewhere in between.
