Doppelganger Spider-Man (Marvel Legends) Custom Action Figure
Custom #:79429
Name:Doppelganger Spider-Man
Custom Type:Action Figure
Toy Series:Marvel Legends
Creator:syntaxic
Date Added:January 16, 2016
Base Figure:Pizza Party Spider-Man
Height:6.00 inches
The Doppelganger Spider-Man was one of my favorite characters from when I was younger thanks to the Maximum Carnage cross-over. Since I doubt we'll ever get an official update to this figure, I decided to make one myself. The base is the Pizza Party Spider-Man, with two extra arms from the same figure. The hands and feet were stolen from Legends Nightcrawler, with the head coming from the old ToyBiz Doppelganger with the tongue removed.

I also added magnets to his feet so that he can climb on walls (or fridges, whatever).

I wondered what the arm technique was. Thanks for explaining what appears to be a super simple method . The figure looks great!

No problem. The biggest issue is just making sure the hole isn't too big. If so, you'll end up with a floppy arm, and you definitely don't want that. If you're able to crack the torso, it's definitely worth a shot, but the hole method allows for the arms to be placed slightly back from the seam, which is great for the middle set to avoid too much clustering.

No problem at all! It's definitely a fun custom, but can get very expensive, very quickly. Also useful if you're wanting to do a Six-Armed Spidey (which I was sorely tempted to just keep once I got all the arms on).

I love this man, I would really like to tackle this character one day, so to see it nicely like this is great. I'd love to know how you attached the arms in the torso. Great choice on the hands and feet, and you matched the red and webbing perfectly.

The head choice is superb though

Originally I had planned to crack the torso open and add the extra arms that way, but the plastic they're using on the bodies these days is not nearly as hard as I'm use to; the plastic bent and ripped when I tried to get the torso open. Thankfully, I had a few spares so no big loss there.

What I ended up doing, since the plastic is somewhat malleable, was just drilling fairly small holes in the torso and then heating and popping in the arms. So long as the hole isn't too large, it works great and holds just fine.

The hands and feet could probably do with a bit of a gloss coat since the original figure has one, but it's not really noticeable in person. Also, I originally tried dyeing Nightcrawler's hands and feet to a more red base, but that didn't work. Only the hard plastic pegs took the die, while the soft plastic didn't take at all.

And thanks re: head choice - I've always been a fan of the more classic Doppelganger look, but it's so easy to mess up. I had originally planned on using a spare Carnage head or something and modding it, but then I found the old Toybiz Doppelganger and it just made so much more sense to use something that already existed. The tongue was annoying and I need to work a little more on the teeth, but I have a feeling I wouldn't have been able to do as good a job if I had tried to mod a different figure to make it work.

Thanks! It's a shame that he wasn't around very often. I'm not as keen on his newer design, so definitely had to go for the classic look on this one.

Thanks! I actually completed this guy way back in March, but for some reason I think figurerealm was charging for uploading customs or something around that time. Glad to see that's no longer the case!
