I got some new paints (Army Painter brand) and wanted to get some practice in to see how they handled before I used them on a more complicated project. Marvel Select Sabretooth is a favorite figure of mine, but his paint job is kind of cartoony so he got volunteered. I wanted leathery, realistic, and just generally the kind of look that used to give Jubilee night terrors. 'Course, now I want to make a little 90s Jubilee for him to, er, play with!

I liked them OK? I've never used a wash before, which was the main reason I picked up a set. They do good on textured surfaces, but for smooth surfaces and gradients I'd stick with regular paints or pastels unless I wanted that leathery look. Like any paint brand, some colors have excellent pigmentation, some only have decent pigmentation. Definitely better than average and really good for the price point. I brought them to my gaming group's figure painting night and even the new painters could tell the difference and really liked working with the army painter paints. Fun color names, too! I touched up Sabes with colors like "Chaos Red" and "Monster Brown" If you get them, add ball bearings to all the bottles as mixing balls because they wouldn't mix up otherwise. The metallic shades are really good, very pigmented and don't leave brush marks.

My go-to for paints is Golden Fluid acrylics. Some shades are a little too transparent to use as an opaque coat instead of a tint, but I really like how they bond to plastic and stay flexible after they dry. They dry very shiny though. For brush on matte sealant, Delta Ceramacoat is good and really waterproof. For aerosol, Mr. Super Clear is the only one I've used that doesn't have a chemical reaction with soft plastics and do that sticky thing over time.

Definitely has a more leathery appearance now, really like how all the little wrinkles pop now.

Well don't leave us hanging, what do you think of those paints? How do they compare to other stuff you've used? What techniques are easier/harder to do with them?
