As an infant in 1854, La Sangre was on a ship sailing to Africa with her family when the boat was attacked by vampire pirates. The pirates slaughtered the entire ship, except for La Sangre who was rescued by the Shade before she was completely dead. Using his powers to remove the toxin from her blood, the Shade saved the small child, though she was left with a weaker form of vampirism. La Sangre grew to her teens when her growth stopped and she became an immortal teen. Returning to Spain, she has become one of the countries greatest defenders. Beloved by her countrymen, La Sangre offers the unique juxtaposition of being a Catholic vampire. If you blinked you probably missed her appearances having been in one panel of a James Robinson penned issue of Superman as well as a three issue arc in the most recent Shade series. A daywalker in the light of Blade, La Sangre helped defend Barcelona against her arch-nemesis the Inquisitor alongside the Shade, whom she considers her adoptive father. La Sangre literally translates to 'the blood' and it's this study of blood and family that has often made the Shade an interesting character to study during his long history, be it from characters like La Sangre or his ages-long battle against the Ludlows. While short in appearances, I thought La Sangre was a nice departure from the typical woe-is-me Hamlet-type vampires. Instead of being a creature of the night she openly battles crime and as such is a celebrated hero in Spain. Maybe someday her character will be revisited, until then if you're interested be sure to check out The Shade 5-6-7. Because of her obscurity, I went ahead and added a couple images from the series by artist Javier Pulido. So La Sangre is basically a Marvel Legends Nico Minoru figure since I thought the design of the figure was a near perfect match in details and size. I kept the same Nico head, but switched the hair to that of a DCUC Powergirl, but then resculpted the bangs a little to differentiate the style to more closely resemble La Sangre's hair. Besides that I used a combo of a DCUC Powerwoman cape and the hood from an ML Spider-Gwen figure. I cut off the lower legs and added the boots from a Diamond Select Liv Moore IZombie figure but then sculpted them to be a little taller and to have the stockingon top. I also added a modified pair of fishnets I got off a DC Universe Zatanna figure, and switched out the hands to the claw-like hands that ML White Tiger had. And then painted. Even though she's a pretty obscure, I really thought she had a unique look, and there aren't a lot of customs I thought that Nico figure would match so perfectly. I originally wanted to finish her in time for Halloween but the holidays and other commitments made her much more of a slow go. Plus I wanted to finish my Shade custom first so I could post them together. Feel free to take a look at him as well. Thanks for checking her out! ![]() |
