TARS is one of three former U.S. Marine Corps tactical robots along with CASE and KIPP featured in the Interstellar universe. Despite being a robot who follows the order of his crew, TARS is quite intelligent and is capable of acting on his own. He suspected the possibility of Mann betraying the crew and disabled the auto-pilot to prevent Mann from stealing the Endurance.

For TARS I wanted a different approach than its fellow CASE. My plan for TARS was to give it, all the movement capabilities as was showed in the movie.

TARS is integrated by four separate modules. The gimmick for its mobility is that all the articulations were made using 18 magnets.

One of the challenge of the articulations was that the magnets must match the positive with the negative side in every position, including rotation.

To make it, I used plastic warning signs, that I bought in Home Depot. I engraved this material with all the small panels that TARS has. The panels with screens were made with acrylic. The internal structure was made using cardboard.
For the paint I used aluminium color and transparent spray to seal the paint. Additionally I painted every panel unions with black to highlight the details. Regards.
