This is my first custom ever. The base was the Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie figure. I used the heat and pop method to completely disassemble Spider-Man and paint the parts individually. I was initially ambitious and wanted to sculpt the extra armor for the knees and elbows, but I decided to stick with painting only for my first custom. I did dremel away the costume line sculpting around the neck to try to give some depth to the "Armored" part of the costume, but this was the extent of my non-paint customization. I used Testor's flat black and metallic silver acrylics for most of the figure and Tamiya metallic silver for the spider on the back and some touch ups. All in all I'm pretty happy with how it turned out for my first try and adding no sculpting. I'm sure this recipe has been done before and likely much better than I did, but I had fun, made a lot of mistakes, and learned a lot. The tutorials on this site were a huge help. I would really like opinions from everyone on the eyes. I saw these portrayed many different ways when doing a google image search, but I had initially used Web of Spider-Man #100 as a source and on that cover it looks like the eyes are entirely silver. Some images had white interior and some had white interior with black outline. Update: took Dr. Nightmare's suggestion and added the black around the eyes. I think this looks much better than the previous solid silver. Please wait... |

If you're just starting, it's a good idea to hold off on sculpting on a character/custom you really really like. Get experience first then come back to it so you do a better job. But start practicing sculpting asap!
Also, thanks for saying the tutorials helped you. Over the years I've only read a handful of times from people that the tutorials were really helpful to them, so thanks for saying so. It's tough to stay motivated to do things, for both personal projects and for the customizing community, when there's almost zero feedback.
(Also, seriously, the username "Spider-Man" wasn't taken yet!? Good job grabbing it! xD)
