Though the scholars in Rivendell have recorded the death of High King Gil Galad as from the burning touch of the unclean hand of Sauron the Deceiver, the orcs tell it differently.

As Souron placed his hand upon King Gil Galad, three loyal orc lieutenants from rival clans ran to their dark lords assistance. The three continuously hammered the dying king and claimed the kill simultaneously.
They eventually killed each other off through out the years aruguing over the claim. Gooluk was the last standing and would have been chosen to lead Souron hoards against Gondor but he was stabbed in the back and fed to a warg by a diseased upstart named Gothmog.
