Known as the Monkey King, he is the protagonist of the classic Chinese epic novel Journey to the West, based on popular stories that go back to the Tang Dynasty. The novel narrates its existence from its birth, is dedicated in particular as he accompanied the monk Xuanzang, also known as Sanzang or Tangseng, to recover the Buddhist sutras of India. Some scholars [citation needed] believe that it is inspired by the legend of Hánuman, the Hindu monkey hero of the epic book Ramayana.
