Piotr "Peter" Rasputin was born on a collective farm in the former Soviet Union called "The Near Lake", collective Baikal Ust-Ordynski in Siberia. He lived there with his mother, father and little sister, Illyana. His older brother, Mikhail, had been a Russian astronaut and had died, apparently, in a space accident. Peter's mutant abilities appeared during his adolescence when a runaway tractor went straight to his sister. Professor Charles Xavier came into contact with him. Xavier recruited a new X-Men team to rescue the original team, most of whom had been captured by the mutant living island, Krakoa.
