“Down down down in Goblin town!” Even back when I was collecting the 3.75” hobbit figures I hated the version produced by thebridgedirect and I can only assume they got early concept art for the figure in the same way Bolg had a complete overhaul and the original design became the dungeon master at Dol Guldur. The design and the performance of Barry Humphrey’s is so unforgettable and gives us such a unique and enjoyable character despite his short lived on screen appearance and I really wanted to capture the character in that main expression. I believe I have done so. So when I started making Hobbit customs in the six inch scale (which ended up in me becoming a customizer way beyond what I thought I would) this was one I thought I’d never be able to do. I saw D2’s custom and thought there’s no way I could do that and that was 3-4 years ago when I hadn’t even got an account here, but as the years go by you get better and get more bold and turns out this wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be but still a lot of sculpting and patience was required and sewing which I still am not a fan of though this was easy. So like D2 I used a kilawog from a Green Lantern 6” scale line and sculpted all over him. I wish I had taken more wip pics but I’m currently working on 6 other projects simultaneously so I didn’t think to. The staff is made from a brown plastic coat hanger carved to look treelike then it’s just miliput for the animal skull with two cocktail sticks, the skull from the Moria diorama and a winter soldier spare head for the zombie goblin shrunken head or whatever it is. I researched the film, concept art, BTS and modules put out by weta and the warhammer figure as well as the 3.75 one but mainly the film was the obvious inspiration. I used bits of Gandalf the white hair, stuck them to the chin then sculpted where the hair leads to the top of the head and the crown is also cocktail sticks and milliput. I varnished the eyes and warts boils etc to make him life like and sculpted toes and nails and that infamous chin. I could go on the point is it took a lot of sculpting, base paint, second paint etc etc. More pics when I have some more time but I’m super busy lately so posting when I can thanks for having a look! Please wait... |
