It has taken me forever to get the parts to build this but I've wanted to do it ever since I stumbled onto this guy.

I have a taste for obscure characters and properties, and Sonny is pretty obscure. Hailing originally from the Japanese arcade version of Double Dragon 3, Sonny was the obligatory Player 3 character and a pallette swap of the Lee Brothers. He shows up as a hidden character in Double Dragon 4 if you can unlock him (not easy!)

In regard to back story, it's nonexistent. Is he another twin of the Lee brothers (making it a Triple Dragon??), is he a cousin, or is he just a buddy and fellow Sousetsuken practitioner. Nobody knows! But here he is to rumble in the post-apocalyptic slums with his fellow primary colored clan.

I wanted to make him look a bit different than the Lees, and as you can see, they all have their own jacket style. I definitely wanted the hand wraps for him to give him a more street fighter vibe. Sonny's only official artwork is arcade promo work that shows him with a yellow tank top and black pants along ith blonde or red hair, but the game sprites are naturally identical to the Lees with a yellow scheme. I decided to blend the two a bit and give him a white tank top instead of a cutoff shirt like the Lees. I chose black hair not only for the color contrast, but as a nod to a fan-made game that included Sonny and gave him the last name "Liu", insinuating a Chinese heritage.

That yellow suit with all the cargo pockets sure stands out. Maybe he shops at the same store as April O'Neil.
