So while I appreciate and really liked Hasbro's Adam Warlock from the Mantis BAF Series last year (complete with Magus alternate head!), it wasn't quite classic enough for me. One of the worst figures from the Dark Times during Hasbro's early years producing Marvel Legends was, without a doubt, Adam Warlock. It had a terrible base body with awful articulation, and bad paint, too. I mean, no gold/orange skin? Sheesh. Plus, mine had a misassembled head with the hair never quite attached right. I remembered that I had an extra Classic Deadpool figure from ordering a full case of the Sasquatch Series, which I thought was the perfect base body (anytime I don't need to sand joints down to avoid paint rub is a win in my book). Plus, seeing "Infinity War" last week got me really interested in tackling something cosmic, and you can't get much more cosmic than an "Infinity Gauntlet" era Adam Warlock. Man, you gotta love Jim Starlin! That guy can write a cosmic story like no other. Recipe: Head, bicep/Infinity Gauntlet, staff, cape: Adam Warlock (Red Hulk Series) Body: Sasquatch Series Classic Deadpool Light effect: Dazzler I started by removing the aforementioned parts from the old Adam Warlock figure. I then removed the Deadpool parts and overlays. I dremeled out a hole in the head to fit the neck's ball peg. I then took an X-acto and sliced out the bar from the Adam Warlock forearm and pulled out the joint. I then drilled a thin hole through the forearm and then drilled a thicker hole on the one side before heating and popping a peg into holes to attach the Infinity Gauntlet forearm to the Deadpool body. I heated the arm and firmly pressed both sides together before running it under cold water so it would stay in place. It was still a little loose, but nowhere as bad as it would have been, and it easily holds a pose. I then removed Adam's hair and painted the face a bright orange. I subsequently took the tan chunk of plastic Hasbro used for Adam's hair and drybrushed yellow onto it; I feel that this definitely made Adam much more comic accurate. I then glued both pieces back together with some Krazy Glue. I painted the missing parts of Adam's costume a flat black. I then gave his cape's folds and the red parts of his costume a dark red wash, but not a heavy one; just enough to try and bring out the subtle details. I also drybrushed a red onto the cape, too, to better match the rest of his costume. I also found his inside cape too bright and "lemony" so I drybrushed some yellow in there, too. I painted his neck a fleshtone before adding orange to it so its color would more closely match that of his face. I knew there had to be something more I could do to better illustrate his powers, as well as the Infinity Gauntlet's powers, and I remembered I had an extra Dazzler effect which I think really brings the whole thing together nicely. I don't like to toot my own horn too much, but I can confidently say that this is much better than Hasbro's attempt at the character (hard to believe that figure originally came out 10 years ago!), and I'm relieved to get the old, ugly figure off of my sight. He's gonna look really cool on my Cosmic/Fantastic Four shelf. I wouldn't mind eventually seeing Hasbro redo this version of Adam sometime soon, perhaps in a 2-pack with a classic Thanos! ![]() |
