I was inspired by the Foolkiller request thread on the Fwoosh to make this guy, not that I needed much prodding to make him. You see, I'm a huge fan of his creator, Steve Gerber, as well as his run on Man-Thing in the 70's. I'm also a huge fan of Roger Stern and his run on Spider-Man. I really enjoy making Spider-Man villains, and this guy is, I think, too obscure for Hasbro to make, at least in this costume. It also didn't hurt once I realized that I had all the parts to make this crazy nut. I would say he's a combination of the first three Foolkillers, but he's particularly inspired by the second version, Greg Sallinger, save for those funky-cut boots of his, as well as the absence of purple on his boots and gloves. I used the Spider-Man by Roger Stern omnibus for reference art while working on this custom. It's a fantastic read, and I can't recommend it enough. Recipe: Head, body, belt: Secret War Captain America Gun, holster: ToyBiz Series V Nick Fury Hat sash: Brother Voodoo The brim of the hat is made from the plastic window of a Marvel Legends box. I traced the top of his head onto the plastic, then drew the shape of the hat around it. I used an X-acto to cut out the center, and cut the rest of the hat out with scissors. I heated and bent the brim into the shape I needed. Then I used Milliput to sculpt the top of the hat and sash around it. I used Milliput to also sculpt his necklace and odd belt buckle after I shaved the details off the belt. I also sculpted over his ears to make it look more like he was wearing a mask over them. I then glued the holster on with Krazy Glue so that the Fury gun would fit. I originally planned to use the recent Bullseye figure's gun and holster, but they look too small on this figure; plus this one looks more accurate to the comics. I used an X-acto knife to also separate his thumbs and index fingers, as well as his index finger and middle finger on the right hand so that he could hold his Purification Gun. I painted his costume blue before adding a black wash to bring out the details of the sculpt and to give it that comic book look I so love. I wanted to somehow really make this guy strand out from any Foolkiller customs that came before him, and then it hit me: Give him his calling card! I found a page from the early 90's maxi-series and printed it out at 15% it's original size, then wrapped it in clear packing tape. I could have made it smaller but I wanted it to still be big enough to read. The card fits snugly between his thumb and index finger. I cut off the tattered ends of Brother Voodoo's sash and glued it in place upon the hat. I think it looks cool, like it's blowing in the breeze. I am very pleased with how this guy came out, and I hope you are too. Now I not only have a cool villain for my Spider-Man shelf, but a Man-Thing villain as well. ![]() |
