When I heard Mattel would be releasing such a monstrously cool T-Rex figure, I knew what I had to do. I'm a huge Jack Kirby fan, and I thought this would be a fun repaint. It's certainly my biggest custom/repaint to date. Recipe: Mattel's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" Super Colossal T-Rex figure (repaint) So if you don't know already, the plan was to repaint Mattel's Super Colossal T-Rex figure into a Devil Dinosaur custom. It's based on the title character from the woefully short-lived Devil Dinosaur 9-issue Marvel series of the late 70's (fun read, definitely check it out). Since this was going to require more than my usual Testors paint jar's content, I picked up some acrylic Studio 71 red and black paints from Pat Catan's. I completely dry brushed the cadmium red all over the body save for his eyes, inner mouth, and teeth. I then mixed up a dark red wash which was then applied to the figure before painting his finger and toe nails black. I left his lower jaw and underbelly the regular red without a wash (save for the scratches/scars) so as to give it a look which many reptiles seem to possess. This paint dries much slower than what I'm used to, so this custom took about 5-6 days worth of paint work and patience. I haven't noticed any paint rub yet when posting him about, but I suppose time will tell. As he is, I think he looks great and I'm very happy to have him, since who knows when or even if Hasbro will ever get to this prehistoric beast. Now only I could figure out where I'm going to put him... ![]() |
