Shuma Gorath is a commission piece I made for one of my customers. The porject was a lot of trial and error. I started off with a ball of sculpy and used wire to make the tentacles. They were covered in apoxie sculpt. I ended up having to cover every inch of the sculpy in apoxie sculpt due to the sculpy not holding the weight of the apoxie sculpt tentacles. Me was painted with model masters acrylics.
I have received this figure. And it is a massive sculpture of a character that appears to have been incredibly well researched. If this were a person's favorite character, this would be the ideal version of it. It stands over a foot tall and over a foot wide. The artists choices here are all very well chosen. As with all of his creations, Shuma-Gorath looks fantastic from every possible angle. The back of the creature is as carefully detailed as the front and each tentacle. Carefully crafted and colored for the proper eerie effect. The skin tones have an oozing other-worldly feel in an alien almost just-born effect. The musculature of the back showing tentacles emerging from several directions gives it a look of strength and efficiency.
The 2 upper tentacles on either side are definitely reaching outward. With the bottom ones reaching, tho slightly appearing to be strike ready. The bottom most serves not only as a stand to hold up the head. But also as a third of several arms slithering along the ground. The top center appears to be reaching out to pull you in. All tendrils have a flailing effect of being in persistent movement. For a sculptural piece that has no real moving parts, it has the appearance of extreme flailing, slithering and, believe it or not, wailing. It gets in your head that it may have some type of wailing inside your head loud noises sound. The single giant eye always appeared to me to be to be on the opening phase. He has detailed the eyeball brilliantly with veins and side ball colorations. The rest of the head/body has a development solely in support of the single powerful eye. The pupil itself is also perfectly realized producing a mesmerizing gaze that anyone would find chilling. You can see from his other larger figures that details on every side are intricately nuanced.
I have it mounted prominently at the top of my display in a large room. The eye does indeed follow you around the room as the whole piece reaches out toward you beckoning in an almost seducing allure. And I'm fairly certain it is boring a hole thru my soul.
As with all of his Living Planet/moons figures, This one gives you a sense that it stands as a masterpiece. He knew it had to be big, impressive, slithery and hypnotic all in one. It is a HUGE piece that is creatively a bombshell statement of this figure artist's mastery of his subjects. It is frightening, maniacal, sensual, unsettling and mesmerizing all at once. Both repulsive and alluring at the same time.
Absolutely outstanding! I cringe at the amount of sculpt some of my more complex projects take, but I can't imagine how much this took. Phenomenal work!
OUTSTANDING!!! This artist has done the most ideal versions of Ego the Living Planet, Super Ego, Id the selfish moon, Eternity & Eon. And now the Ideal Shuma-Gorath! He seems to just know something essential of his subjects. There is always that something extra in his work that make his creations disturbingly full of life. Incredibly astute craftsmanship is the mark of this artist. I have also noticed that pictures usually do not due justice to his work. Seeing them live is always a shockingly awesome experience.
