Her long life is attributed to the fact that she is a "psychic vampire", able to drain the vital energy of others in order to expand her own life. Its name derives from the ancient lunar deity Selene, daughter of the Titans Hiperion and Tea. Selene was born 17,000 years ago. The elders of his tribe recognized her as a very advanced being and sent the entire tribe, including her own mother, to sacrifice their lives to feed her. Black Queen of the Hellfire Club Selene directed her faithful to carry out the tasks that finally allowed her to leave Nova Roma. Selene headed to New York City, where she met Juggernaut in a bar. Selene planned to seduce and murder him, but it was prevented when Wolverine provoked a fight between Juggernaut and Colossus. Selene then discovered the existence of Rachel Summers, whom Selene sought to make her her slave, only to be defeated by the X-Men. Before the X-Men saved her, Selene had tracked Rachel to the home of a young man named Nicholas Damian, who had left Rachel to spend the night at home. Selene murdered the young man, and Rachel vowed revenge.5 With the help of one of her worshipers, Friedrich Von Roehm, Selene got in touch with the Hellfire Club, and forced the group to become the new Black Queen. Selene was instrumental in the X-Men's plan to stop Kulan Gath, after he transformed New York into part of the Hyborian Age.6 Selene never hid her contempt for Sebastian Shaw, the Black King of the Club, nor her interest in ruling the Hellfire Club as the only leader. Shaw and Emma Frost conspired to kill Selene by manipulating and training the young Fire Star mutant (Angelica Jones) to murder her, although this failed when Star of Fire discovered what they were planning.7 The relationship of Selene and the Hellfire Club with the X-Men reached a point where the X-Men even allowed Rachel Summers to kill Selene. Wolverine felt obliged, on his honor, to prevent Rachel from becoming a murderer, and therefore saved Selene's life, which seriously injured Summers. Selene was filled with rage, and used the incident to force the Lord Cardinal of the Club to hunt down and kill Rachel. This caused a battle between the X-Men and the Hellfire Club, but the conflict stopped unexpectedly when the appearance of Nimrod, the super sentinel, who killed Selene's assistant, Rhoem, and was bent on killing the X-Men and Club members. These, and the X-Men, agreed to a truce, fighting together until the Nimrod escaped.8 After this battle, Selene again devised secret plans involving Nova Roma and Magma. Magma left the New Mutants to join the Hellions, due to his love for Empath. But shortly after, he was called home by his father to contract a marriage arranged for political purposes in Nova Roma. However, back home, Magma was accompanied by Empath, and finally her supposed marriage, orchestrated by Selene, was dissolved.9 Some time later, it was revealed through Empath, that Nova Roma was nothing more than an elaborate lie, devised by Selene several decades ago: In a desperate attempt to relive the happy days in which he lived in ancient Rome, Selene kidnapped hundreds of people and took them to the jungles of the Amazon, to a city built by herself. She lobotomized her prisoners and made them believe they were ancient Romans of the Amazon. Magma was one of those souls kidnapped and lobotomized. The city was destroyed and the captives returned to their normal lives throughout the world.10 Shortly after, Selene gave the quality vote to expel Sebastian Shaw from the Hellfire Club, when the tension between Shaw and the newly hired White King, Magneto went out of control.9 But without Magneto or Emma Frost suspecting, Selene had decided the fate of the Club and began to plot its destruction. She assembled an army of young mutants with the help of the omnipotent mutant Gamesmaster, the Upstarts. Under his authority, the Upstarts participated in a massacre against the leaders of the Infernal Fire Club Internal Circle: (Magneto, Sebastian Shaw, Donald Pierce, Emma Frost, Hellions). Selene manipulated her young followers with the promise of a game, where each murder committed would grant them points which would lead to a prize. Selene's involvement with the Upstarts was short, as she was betrayed by upstart Trevor Fitzroy, who subjected her to torture.11 In the need to restore her power, Selene attacked and killed her fellow Externals, the "immortal" mutants. Although she was combated by X-Force, she managed to complete the massacre. She appeared after returning to Brazil, where she followed Sunspot. She attracted Sunspot and offered her a position of power in the Club ![]() |
