First of all, I want to thank our very own Phineas Curmudgeon for the feet that really helped pull off this character's overall look. You're the man, Phin! Anywho, back in early (or was it mid?) December, Stark Resilient and I decided to do a custom exchange, not worried that it would probably be after the holidays when we finished and received them. I knew whomever I made had to be an Iron Man villain, since he has this whole shelf dedicated to them. I was eager to see him standing amongst Shellhead's enemies. I also wanted to make a figure of a character I don't see Hasbro ever making. That narrowed it down a bit. What made me settle on Happy Hogan as the Freak was the fact that I wanted to do something cool and unexpected, and I knew from personal experience that some of my favorite customs were ones I made using Build-a-Figures (Man-Bull and Cameron Hodge); I knew I could pull off the character with an Absorbing Man base body. Head, torso, arms (skin and metal arm), legs down to the knees: Absorbing Man Calves and shins: Dormammu Feet: 2003 Movie Hulk figure Coat: ToyBiz Marvel Legends Series II Hulk I used a Dremel and some sandpaper to reshape the Absorbing Man's head from an egg shape into something more realistic and accurate to the character. I also shaved down all the joints to avoid paint rub. I then swapped out the calves and shins from the Dormammu BAF with some heat, since I knew the parts would work in proportion to the body. I had to fill in some rectangular pegholes on the shins and calves with some Milliput. I used the same Milliput to sculpt torn pantlegs, which I'm very proud of. The ankle pegs popped right into the Hulk feet without any problems. I painted the skin and then drybrushed a lighter skin tone over it to highlight the wrinkle and muscle definition. For his pants, I painted them grey and drybrushed white over them. I painted the eyes red and outlined them in black. I then placed the jacket on him which, I feel, brings the whole look together. I then disassembled him for Stark Resilient to put together himself, and I'm happy to say Freak is on his Iron Man shelf, standing amongst such peers like the Mandarin, Morgan Stark, and the mysterious Melter! I'm glad to see he went to such a great friend, and a neat display, too! ![]() |
