Making removable clothes

Posted in Custom Workstation

I'm practicing making clothes (if you can call a skimpy loincloth that) for figures.

This material I was using had the perfect texture, but once I started sewing it the "leather" veneer basically disintegrated as I went along. (I don't know how it was even used to make the purse I cut the piece from in the first place.)

Looking for suggestions for what fake leather fabric material to use now.

Here's a better look at the stitching, it's functional. As you can see from the previous pic, when made with fabric you can make the belt sag a little in front so it doesn't look so unnaturally straight.

Tips:

Don't use hot glue or super glue to stick fabric together. Hot glue is messy and creates bulk, super glue soaks into everything and makes things rigid.

If you absolutely want to glue things to skip stitching, use fusible webbing or permanent fabric glue.

================================

Attached the backflap using the new leather scraps. The belt actually sags nicely in front and back, I dampened the flap so it hangs well on the butt, should hold that shape once it's dry.

Quick tip, you can scrape the "hairy" side of the leather with a knife to scrape off a lot of the material there, making the piece a little thinner and more pliable. Then wet it, shape it, and let it dry so it will stay in that shape more or less.

Got the scrap leather today, it's real leather about 0.8mm-1mm thin. Made the belt and it looks really neat, now going to stitch on the flaps. Added pics to the post.

Since it's real leather, this is tough to stitch

Try using quilting cotton or a stretchy synthetic, then coat it in a thin layer of tacky glue mixed with water after you sew it. That should (with some paint) make it at least look leatherish. Faux leather is awful, and I've never come across real leather thin enough to scale to toys (and sag and drape in a realistic manner and all that.

Thanks for the insight, if these scrap leather pieces are too stiff I can just use them for belts and straps, then I can attach a slinkier fabric for the flaps. I did find synthetic leather too though, they're a dollar for a 4in by 4in square which is plenty for this.

I think you can "sculpt" sagginess into leather though, you get it wet so it's more pliable, shape it, and let it dry to hold that shape. It's still stiff though, so yeah unfortunately it doesn't drape naturally, but I hope I can work it enough to look good here.

I ordered a few scrap leather pieces from this store https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vienna-Fudge-B ... 2019194893

Listing says they're thin (about 1mm) so they should look okay. I don't know if they're real leather or not, but I'll be happy as long as they don't crumble when scrunched.

You might could use Liquid Stitch fabric glue to attach pieces of cloth together, especially for super small stuff like a loin cloth. It works pretty well, and you don't have to worry about the fabric fraying.

Yep, though the problem here is the material itself is garbage, I need a more durable alternative. I have to be able to stitch it because it looks more "finished" than just fabric.
